Mervyn Druian talks to Aesthetic Dentistry Today about his love of cruises and conventions and how joining Dentex has given him more time for his family.

What motivated you to pursue a career in dentistry?

It was my family dentist that inspired me to get into dentistry, so I always knew I wanted to do it from a young age. He was so jovial and nice, and always made me feel so welcome – going to the dentist was the highlight of my school holiday.

What do you like most about it?

I have such a wonderful team – some of whom have been with me for 20 years – so coming to work is really like seeing a second family. I also love being able to focus on my clinical work.

What career path would you have chosen if you hadn’t pursued dentistry?

I would have been an accountant. I studied accountancy and dentistry at university, and originally went into accountancy. But after two weeks on the job I knew it wasn’t for me, and luckily went on to pursue my true passion of dentistry.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I get up and get out to get to my practice – I look forward to going to work every day. It never gets boring and every day is different. I also love the interaction I have with my patients – it is the most peoplecentred profession I could have and it can, quite literally, change someone’s life. We often get people coming in who won’t talk without covering their mouth with their hand, but transforming their smile gives them so much confidence – they become a different person.

What keeps you awake at night?

If someone is unhappy – that upsets me.

Describe yourself in a few words

I’m a nerd – dentistry is my hobby not just my career, and my holidays often revolve around a reunion with my classmates.

How do you unwind?

Spending time with my family or eating out at restaurants works well for me. I used to find it difficult to find the time, but now that Dentex has taken away my admin worries, I have much more free time for a better work-life balance, and am no longer distracted when I do spend time with my family. When I go away I know my practice will still be working well – in fact, it has enabled me to continue working, instead of selling up or retiring.

Where’s your favourite holiday destination?

I enjoy going to dental conventions in America – although the next one I’m going to is in Portugal. Other than that, I love going on cruises – around Russia, the Caribbean or Norway.

What’s your favourite film, TV programme and book?

I don’t tend to go to the movies, but I always find myself watching the news as well as reading three to four newspapers a day. I always want to continue to learn and educate myself, and enjoy reading motivational books – The Art of Being Brilliant is one of my favourites, as well as anything by Jeffrey Gitomer.

Do you play any sports?

Swimming and walking are my main activities. I enjoy walking close to my home in Hampstead Heath and always try to cover at least five miles a day.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Classical music and the Beethoven classics are my favourites – it’s what I play in the surgery.

Tell us something about yourself that others might not know.

I like being involved at the forefront of technology. Being part of Dentex has allowed me to do the things that don’t come cheap, such as getting a 3D scanner. I’ve also invested in Nucalm technology, which helps to relax and destress a patient who may be anxious about sitting in the dentist chair.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Dentex is providing a fantastic dimension to practising dentistry. I’ve been a partner for a year and a half – and it has been brilliant.
