If you dream of taking the entrepreneur’s path, you face numerous challenges in dentistry. It’s not so much that the profession is particularly hostile to entrepreneurialism – more that, there simply isn’t the time.
Since becoming a partner with Dentex, I understand the business of dentistry better than I have ever done. I am clinically skilled and able to increase revenue within practices. However, as part of Dentex I’ve been able to improve my understanding of the business aspects.
The administrative, regulatory and financial demands were limiting my ambitions to grow my business. I was focusing more on running the practices I had and at a very local level. Now, I can run a group of practices on a much larger scale – there is no way I could have done this without Dentex.
This is due to a combination of things – no doubt having people who understand the business of dentistry and do this well makes a huge difference, but Dentex also support its partners with staff training, practice maintenance, advertising, securing new business, financial management, profit and loss, and of course, compliance.
Meanwhile, my business has kept its identity because it’s a partnership not an ownership and Dentex runs the business with you, not for you.
It has also helped me to acquire associates – dentists want to come and work alongside Dentex’s renowned partners – and the model is enabling us to grow practices by introducing specialisms and broadening skillsets. It has allowed me to not only to attract specialist services down here in the south west, but our expansion and association with Dentex also means we are now attracting specialists to work within our group. Previously, it was hard to convince practitioners from London and Bristol to come down here to work with us but Dentex has made us much more attractive.
This has definitely been a benefit for our patients, too, who now no longer have to travel to seek specialist treatments.
